CARC's on-premises, private cloud platform is here!

By Dani Cannella
Our long-anticipated on-premises, private cloud computing platform has officially launched! Dubbed Artemis, this new service complements existing CARC systems and services by offering researchers access to virtual machines (VMs) on which they can run alternative operating system environments and deploy resources.
The development of Artemis was made possible through an award received from the 2020 NSF grant “CC* Compute: A Customizable, Reproducible, and Secure Cloud Infrastructure as a Service for Scientific Research in Southern California” (NSF award # 2019220). After years of hard work, we are thrilled to provide this cutting-edge service to our users.
Artemis has several VM templates readily available, configured via KMV:
- Ubuntu 20.04
- Ubuntu 22.04
- Amazon Linux 2
- CentOS 7
- Windows Server 2019
In addition, Artemis offers lightweight micro-VMs, configured with Firecracker, for hosting databases and websites, as well as building singularity images:
- Redis
- MySQL
- NGINX
- MongoDB
One of the most useful features of Artemis is the ability to run applications using a graphical user interface (GUI) on both Windows and Linux VMs. See the Graphical User Interface Access to Virtual Machines user guide to get started using GUIs with your VMs!
To help our users get started with Artemis and make the most out of their experience, we are offering a new workshop. Private Cloud Computing on Artemis takes place from 9:00 - 11:00 AM PST on September 15. Keep an eye on our Workshops page for a link to register!
If you have any questions about this new service, please submit a help ticket and we will gladly assist you.
